Understanding the "No Signal" Problem
Seeing a black screen or a "No Signal" message after powering on your Formuler device can have several different root causes — a loose cable, an incorrect TV input, a resolution mismatch, or a deeper software issue. This guide covers all the likely causes in order from simplest to most complex, so start from the top and work your way down.
Fix 1: Check Your HDMI Connection
The most common cause of no signal is a loose or faulty HDMI connection.
- Unplug the HDMI cable from both the Formuler device and the TV, then firmly reconnect it.
- Try a different HDMI port on your TV.
- If possible, try a different HDMI cable altogether — cables can fail without any visible damage.
- Avoid using HDMI splitters or switch boxes if possible, as these can introduce signal issues.
Fix 2: Select the Correct TV Input
This sounds obvious, but it's frequently the actual problem:
- Press the Input or Source button on your TV remote.
- Cycle through inputs until you find the one labeled with the HDMI port your Formuler is connected to (e.g., "HDMI 2").
- Wait a few seconds after selecting each input for the signal to establish.
Fix 3: Resolve a Resolution Mismatch
If your Formuler device was previously set to an output resolution your TV doesn't support, it will display a black screen even though the device is running normally. This often happens after changing the resolution in settings.
How to Reset the Resolution Without a Display
- With the Formuler powered on (even if the screen is black), press and hold the Back button on the remote for 5–10 seconds. On some models, this forces a resolution reset to 1080p.
- Alternatively, locate the reset pinhole on the device and perform a brief reset (not a full factory reset) to restore default display settings.
- Consult your model's manual for the specific key combo to cycle resolutions blindly.
Fix 4: Power Cycle Everything
A full power cycle can resolve temporary glitches in the HDCP handshake between your Formuler and TV:
- Turn off your TV completely (not just standby — unplug it).
- Unplug the Formuler device from power.
- Wait 60 seconds.
- Plug in and power on the Formuler first, wait 30 seconds.
- Then power on the TV and select the correct HDMI input.
Fix 5: Check HDCP Compatibility
HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) is a copy-protection protocol used over HDMI. If there's an HDCP handshake failure between the Formuler and your TV, you'll get a black screen or an HDCP error message.
- Ensure your TV supports HDCP 2.2 if you're trying to play 4K content.
- If using an AV receiver or soundbar in the HDMI chain, it must also be HDCP 2.2 compliant.
- Try connecting the Formuler directly to the TV, bypassing any AV equipment, to isolate the issue.
Fix 6: Factory Reset (Last Resort)
If the device powers on (you can hear or see indicator lights) but there's still no picture after all the above steps, a factory reset may be necessary:
- Go to Settings → Backup & Reset → Factory Data Reset — if you can navigate blindly using the remote and memory of the menu layout.
- Alternatively, access recovery mode during boot (hold the reset/back button while powering on) and select "Wipe Data / Factory Reset".
Warning: A factory reset erases all your settings and app data. Only do this after exhausting all other options.
When to Contact Formuler Support
If none of these steps resolve the issue, the problem may be hardware-related — a damaged HDMI port on the device, a failing power supply, or internal component failure. In this case, contact Formuler's official support team with your device's serial number and a description of the issue. If the device is under warranty, a replacement may be possible.
